so i have a cichlid community in a 55, and i am switching to a larger tank (75 or 90)

the 55 they are in is WAY overfiltered, has lots of rockwork, and lots of gravel

my main question is, if i take most of that water, all the rocks and gravel, and all the filters, and throw them in a new tank, and then fill the rest of the water, then add the fish, is that ok?

i am assuming it is not, and that i have to set the larger tank up just like i would with a new one (cycle it and all that...), but i thought i would ask just in case

It should be fine , as it is the filter you cycle sort of so as long as the filter media is wet , doesn't dry out you should be fine , i persinaly like to leave the tank about 24hours to let the water to setle and the filter/s to move the water about abit .

It should be just fine. I have done it that way several times before. As above says, if you are using the same filters and don't let them sit or dry out, you should be good. Think of it as doing like an 80% water change. There you lose most of your cycled water and it is still okay because you have cycled filters. My opinion anyway.

ive done this proboably 10 times or so, never lost a fish, no ich or disease outbreaks. just transfer everything from the old tank to the new tank and fill er up, then throw in the fish. i dont even use any old water, i just fill up with new tap water just like a water change. as long as the new water has the same perameters as the old water you will be fine, and if youve been keeping up on water changes your tank water should have the same perameters as your tap water.

all your BB is on your filters, decorations, and gravel etc..., it doesnt float around in the water(well an extremely small amount does i suppose), so this so called "cycled water" is a myth.

ok thanks ...

so i suppose that i can do the same with a 29g tank that i have, and moving it to a 75g ?
this tank has 2 sturgeon in it at the moment, so i am very very worried about their health, as they are my favorite fish by far ... or is that too big of a difference in tank size ?

Sturgeons will need a large pond when they are fuly grown , do you know ?

they will ?? i thought that since they get over 10' in the wild i could keep them under 1' in my tank

:banhim::banhim:

YES I KNOW THEY WILL GET BIG

i have a 75 for them now, then a 300-600g tank in the works, then a pond for them. thanks for your concern though
