Moving to the Dark[er] Side:

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Off to a nice start. You will have to upgrade your lighting if you want to keep corals.

Thanks,

Yup I knew I would have to upgrade the lighting.... the upgrade should be shipping out hopefully this week so I'll take some pics when it comes in.. I am sure it will be sufficient... =]

Your well on your way and your setup looks really nice. I think live sand is a waste of money.but that is imo Live rock is a must. I would tell you to check craigslist for cheap stuff, but you haven't been in the sw hobby long enough to know what to look for yet. My best advise though is read read read...lol Looks like you know what your doing any questions ask.
What light did you buy? I just use pc lights for my softies. Lights and rock the two wallet killers, well at least you have one down. lol Check the rocks for aptasia too when you go to buy. Saltwater is a little different, but you'll get the hang of it.
I don't like using live rock in the sump because critters get caught in my pumps. I keep rock in the tank and sponges and chemipure in the sump, works for me.

Looking good! I was thinking of starting one myself pretty soon.

I bought a used t5 nova extreme unit (4x39w). It comes with everything but 2 bulbs. It says its in working condition and has a refund on it if it doesnt work and is not as described. It should hopefully be arriving sometime next week. I read up on the unit and read a bunch of reviews and scanned a few forums about it. It seems to be a decent entry level unit for what I plan to use it for, only thing I read about it that was an issue is that the original bubls it comes with are not that great and you should buy better bulbs (which I already have to get 2 new ones anyways). So we will see. This was the best deal for my wallet. I checked craigslist first to look for any good units, I found a few but they were for 100-200gal+ tanks or 10-20gal tanks, neither size would fit my tank correctly.

As for the live rock, I was told before to look on craigslist but yes I do have a slight idea as to what to look for but not good enough to avoid problems that may come with someones live rock. I am going to be getting my live rock from NE. As for aptasia, I already know to avoid it, I also understand that if for some reason I do aquire it, then peppermint shrimp will eat it, and controll it. I also know that the shrimp can only handle what their size can handle. Obviously I would hope it does not ever end up in my tank. I am slowly learning.

As for sump, any ideas on filter media will def. be taken into consideration. Its a good point that with live rock things may get caught in the pump. I was planning to put ceramic rings in the sump as well, any thoughts?

Probably won't need filter media in your sump. The live rock and sand in the tank will provide enough filtration. Critters will eventually populate the rings, and then get sucked into the pump.

Update:

Tank stock:

-10lbs of live rock.... 20lbs on the way it's currently curing in another tank.
-sixlined wrasse
-pink barred goby
-2 redclaw hermits
-1 what was sold to me as a redclaw hermit but is white with blue in the face..
-1 zooanthid frag
-1 coral frag- reminds me of a tree coral but I am exactly sure what it is, buti t was $1.50.

so far things have been doing good... hopefully I dont jinyx it.
