Hi guys,

I guess I will be seeing many of you soon, since I am now moving to oscars (after my beloved flowerhorn passed away). My tank is a 55gallon... 4ft length... 1ft width and a lil more than 1ft deep (standard 55 gal).

It is a brand new tank.. I do 50% water changes EVERY week...and I make sure ALL food scraps are gone within 4 minutes (if not eaten).

I use water pumps and powerful filtration as well. My question is. Would it be possible to keep 1-2 oscars (1-2 inch in size now) in my tank for around 1 year or so? Once they get too big, my friend has a 150 gallon tank and has no problem taking them in.

But if I maintained the water every week ,would these fish be ok..i mean with some extra effort?

Thank you for your time.

I honestly wouldn't recommend it...Oscars are known for having insane growth spurts in the first year and that imo would be a bit cramped for 2 Oscars.
Could you do it? Of course you could, as long as you're sure your friend would be able to house them once they hit 12"

Yes you will be fine for a year. What filtration do you have?

Thank you all for your great replies. And yes my friend can surely take them. The reason I said this, he is getting one oscar for his 150 gallon (cause he is new to fish keeping) and would love 2 more.

My filtration is two hang over filters Aquaone (cant give the specs of the top of my head), and a Eheim 2217 and one water pump.

they are known to grow at about 1" per month, some are faster others slower.
I currently have an oscar in a 20g long with lots of filtration once he outgrows that I will buy him a bigger tank for life. there is nothing wrong with housing a fish in a smaller tank as long as you are going to upgrade it at a healthy time for the fish.

I have found oscars slow right down around 8"-10" and start getting thicker before hitting their full size

The dimesions you listed: 48x12x15 are for a 40 gallon?

In which case i would save yourself the time and try something other than an O, especially two.

Youre right it is around the 55-60 mark.

I would watch it though. Because with two O's in a 12" wide tank they may begin to get uncomfortable very soon. With larger fish it doesn't always come down solely to volume it is quite often dimensions, i.e width, which will determine stocking.

Also, i'd love a tank with those dims in inches!
