Moving with a Monster

Yeah. My power inverter is built in and doesn't work when the car is off.

How much good, would you say, having a sponge filter (out of an established tank) is for maybe a 5-15 hour trip?

Depends on the purpose of your trip:

If it's transport only, the fish hasn't eaten in a few days and its gut is empty, and it's only a day's drive: You don't need filtration, just aeration.

If you travel over several days and/or move your tank: A sponge will carry enough beneficial bacteria to maintain the water and seed a new tank. That's why I did it. The bacteria in canisters don't last longer than a couple of hours when the filter is off. Same thing with wet/dry. The sponge in the transport bin, however, keeps working and is operational immediately when added to a new set-up.
