I am going to be moving out of my apartment by the end of the month and was wondering if anyone has some inexpensive ideas of how I could transport my 3 piranhas back home. They are about 3 inches in length right now, and they wont be going to far only about an hour drive

Easiest way is to not feed them for several days before packing them. Then, separately bag them and place them in a styro box (you can get from your lfs or buy a cheapo picnic cooler. If possible, take the bagged fish to a lfs that adds O2 to their bags. If O2 is available, pack the Ps in 1/3 water and 2/3 O2. They'll be fine for the hour trip.

Forgot to mention, Have a conditioned tank awaiting the arrival of the Ps. Resetting their tank will be like starting a new tank and the Ps may suffer from the inevitable ammonia spike as the tank pops.

if just an hr you can just put them in a bucket or cooler (proper size of course for your piranhas) put an air stone and hook up battery operated air pump. add the heater back into the container if it'll be a while until the tank is up and running.
The most important part is be careful when you re introduce them back into the tank with new water, make sure you save as much old water as possible and if you'll be using fresh tap water to refill the tank then you may have to add some of those "bacteria in a bottle" such as seachem stability just in case you have lost a good amount(if not all) the BB during the move and with all the new water.

you could remove your filter media, keep it wet, drain the water out of the tank, and then transport the empty tank. Add the filter media back in and refill the tank. Shouldn't affect the bio cycle at all. Those bacteria will survive for quite some time. Most of your beneficial bacteria is on the filter media and the sediment, very little is in the water.

just make sure you don't use tap water without treating it as the chlorine will kill all those bacteria

absolutely :iagree: and don't let chlorinated water get near your filter media either.
