I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the Mozambique tilapia? I saw some for sale recently, but I'm coming up short on info regarding keeping them in an aquarium. Thanks.
I raised a few to 6-7" then gave them to a freind. The ones I had loved to eat and they were always active foraging for food and they will eat anything like most Tilapia will. They were semi aggressive only showing aggression during feeding and little squabbles over territory. They grow pretty big and will breed non stop if allowed to.
i have eight of them. they were very popular in the hobby a few years ago and you'll find more info on recipes for them rather than as an aquarium fish. they are very hardy and can tolerate a very wide PH range. they are prolific mouth brooders and great as a clean up crew in an oscar tank! personaly ive found them non aggressive and have had them in tanks with small african cichlids and even gold barbs with no aggression shown. two males will chase each other but i would think in a tank large enough they can be kept in a harem of say 2 males and 6 females. they can get pretty big and the colours are better when young. mine have produced normal coloured ones and albinos in large amounts so i suspect some real cross breeding in the past in this species. the fry grow incredibly fast
males are darker and brighter with 'duck bill type' heads and lips, and show a more blue couration with a white chin (the white chin is less obvious when they reach about 3 inchs or so) while the females are less colourful and a more rounded head. would you like some pics?
im really enjoying my fish and they are looking to be worthwhile as tank clean up crew. but i wait to see what they are like if they do reach the predicted 12 inchs in length they certainly grow quick. probably as fast as a young oscar
as they are real breeders and not a challenge to breed at all they should be fairly cheap. i wouldnt pay more than about $12 for a 3 inch specimen
hope this helps
looking at the picture thats the white vareity, mine are darker in colour. looks nice though, could be intresting to see what you get from breeding her
What kind of tank space do they require? I've got an empty 55 I'm looking to put something in. Although, it sounds like I could maybe put one in my 125 with a Pacu, GT, and JD.
you may be able to put them in as dither fish with the pacu and GT im not certain. 6 would outgrow the 55 really if the sizes are true i think 1 maybe 2 max when grown in a 55 and to be honest two is a squeeze.
6 would be ok for about a year tops at that point they will be too big for a 55 im certain
It would be a temporary thing. We're building a house this year, and I'm putting a fish room attached to my garage, and I'm probably going to do a pond.
