What is the coldest temps mts can survive in , and do they have to have a substrate.

MTS dig around the substrate. That's their style of comfort. Either gravel or sand works but sand is better for this one. MTS can tolerate as low as 18 degrees since they can lock themselves into the shell for weeks while underground.

Black or white sand work. It depends on your taste. White sand allows poo to look obvious whereas black sand camouflages it.
