Mud turtle care

My husband found a mud turtle today. It is only about an inch big. I currently have him in a 20 gal long. I need advice on how to care for him. Including what to feed him, filter needs etc. This is my first turtle so Any advice would be helpful. Thanks

It's hard to tell from my phone but are you sure that's not a baby common snapper? Does it have a long tail?

The tail is not long...kinda hard to tell on such a small turtle. That's the only picture I have right now, but I do know that he likes to swim and he even appears to sleep under the water

He has yellow markings on his belly and around the brim of his shell

It looks like the few baby snappers I've had in the past and the yellow markings are probably a giveaway.Is the shell rough or smooth?

The shell has 3 rows of tiny ridges. You cant see them but they can be felt.
I guess we wont be keeping him as a pet :-(
