Multiple America - legal arowanas?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
African a loner filter feeder and don't do good with their own but may fit in with the blacks, leichardti and possibly silvers.

in my experience with africans aros they are very aggressive and territorial within their own species but when put with other fish are complete push overs
Nope, those are not correct. I posted this video a few years ago, so it's time to refresh the idea on whether african arowana is "gentle..."

And this is the damage a 17" african arowana could inflict on a 24" channel catfish within 1-2 hours...

Considering the tank is barely big enough for one of those arowanas fully grown I am not surprised there is problems. Like usual an unnatural tank with no decor, room to swim or things to break up the sight pattern so fish can feel more relaxed. Only owned an african aro eons ago for a short time due to it's feeding habits and lack of information on them at the time so it died within a couple weeks. Hence I said it MAY work with the other aros. For every video like that a person may find one where it works(too lazy to post one). All depends on setup, size of tank and whether the fish were raised together when small. Now that I have an asian aro you couldn't pay me to own an african one...Man they are butt ugly!

Due to your location I would only recommend a black arowana. Why?...Silvers-drop eye, jardini aggressive, african aro-butt ugly and appear aggressive from that video. Owned lots of black arowanas and they have all proved good for me together and with other tank mates.

My afro was demonically possessed. Relentlessly pestered and attacked everything but bottom dwellers. This behavior got worse as it grew, started in 18"+ range. By 24" it was a real jerk.

Once they get past their juvenile fragile stage where they have to feed 247, they become hardy brutes

So you provide information or come to conclusion base on an african arowana owned for a short time, died within a couple of weeks due to "lack of information on them." Tank is too small, no decor, feeding habit, butt ugly fish.... The problem is always with everything else, except you, right? How about "too lazy" to learn?

My afro terrorized everything except my polypterus. However, it was my favorite arowana ive had. Hand fed very well. Begged for food. To the people who say they're ugly, to each their own. I think a purple brown fish with green irridescent scales is beautiful. Much more active than a other arowanas as well.

I guess when you can't own an Asian aro you have to settle for something less.

Ya me too. I got a big black after my afro died and I'm just not feeling it at all in comparison. Afro always constantly moving, sifting sand, being a dick to the other fish. Not freakingout all skiddish with movement like this black. I miss it.
