In preperation for a 125 I would like to grow out a few Severum's from juvenile size (about the size of a quarter). I am posting as I would like to know some experiences dealing with a Severum only species tank. I will be doing this in a 29 gallon that is over filtrated and I will create many places to hide. My question is will this go down well in theory without the whole "Each fish has its own temperment" which I know but I don't wanna get three fish to 4+ inches and end up having world war three and having to rehome them. I am on purpose taking a great liking to Severums as they are beautiful fish without the condensed angst of a teenager. I will also house them with a small shoal of rainbow fish.

If you seem to find flaws in this I would love for some opinions of a 29 gallon grow out stocking as my 125 will contain a:

12+ inch oscar (currently in 75 gal)
7+ inch Green Severum (currently in 75 gal)
7+ inch Sun Catfish (currently in 75 gal)

Three severums in a 29 isn’t going to work, even up to 4”. I would give them something with a larger footprint, at least a 40 breeder. I also wouldn’t only try three, as their conspecific aggression will likely get focused on one or two individuals. You’ll want to spread it around more. You can start with 4 - 6 and rehome some as they grow and you move them to larger quarters.

I'm doing the same thing. I have three severums In a 125g they are about 2.5" to 3" with three 3" Congo tetras and two 2" electric blue jacket Dempsey's. Hoping this set up will work out?

Starting out with 8 x 1-2" green severums in a 29g myself, I can tell you it is World War 3. The 2 more dominant ones have reached closer 2.5", and least dominant ones have grown to about 1.5". It doesn't matter how many places there are to hide because, they all learn the tank and seek out the smaller ones to pick on if they are not lip locking their rivals.

The breeder who I bought them from told me that it's been that way for the 3 batches he has raised, high "sibling" aggression.

I moved my Severums on,I got sick of them picking on each other. This was a group of 7 in a 210 gallon.

Like I said in the other thread, I don't think the 29g is going to work for nearly as long as you want it to. Few months maybe, not a year. I also think an Oscar ,4 severums, and a catfish in the 125 is gonna be cramped. I think a better option would be to grow out some acaras, guianacara, or similar smaller cichlids in the 29 instead of severums.
Just my .02

I currently have 2 severums in a 120 (both about 4 inches). I can't imagine adding an oscar and two more sevs all full grown. Maybe just the sevs if they decide to play nice which is far from a guarantee. Or maybe an Oscar and two sevs could work out.

Put me in the 29 is too small to grow out a group of severums camp. To put it simply, at quarter size you're in 'it depends on the individuals' territory, by 4 inches you're well into 'bad idea' territory.
