multiple turtles??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It basically depends on the species of turtle, the size of the living space, the sex of the turtles and the density of animals in the enclosure.

Certain turtles don't do great with each other. I have acouple types of turtles all seperated due to the sizes they will get, and how aggressive.

I think Map Turtles do good with only Red Ear Sliders.

If given enough space, you can keep some species of turtles together. I've kept different native species who live together in the same region, in the same pond before. I believe that giving the animals plenty of space is the key.

Just so you know, your friends map turtle will out grow that 55 gallon tank pretty quickly.

Victous I have a question,

You said giving animals space is the key right?

So if I were to use my 1,100 Gal. Pool Setup would they live in harmony?

As in they will stick to their own territorys?

They = RES, FRT, Softys, and Razorback Musks?

I'm quite tired of keeping them all in seperate tanks. And when they begin to grow out I'll just seperate them and put them each in different pool sections.

I wouldn't put the softshell in, they don't play well with others! I keep a bunch of turtles together, but they will do better if they are similar species, ie; American pond turtles, Asian pond turtles, etc.

Yes I think you could keep all those species together. My only two concerns are with the Softshell and the FRT. The FRT is from the other side of the world and so it is not immune to common harmless diseases/pathogens that the other 3 turtles are use to. That and it is an expensive turtle to possibly sicken. The softshell can get huge if it's a female and could possibly nip your other turtles but I don't have much experience with them. Miguel could probably tell you how they coexist with other species. Don't forget that water turtles are very messy so I hope you have an awesome filtration system running this pond. FRT and Softshells need very clean water. It sounds like it's going to be very nice habitat, can’t wait to see it when you’re done.

FRTs are very aggressive towards other turtles too! I've kept softies with other turtles before (briefly lol), and they are very nippy...plus the claws of the other species tend to injure their shells.

The softshell may not get huge depending on the species, the common Chinese Pelodicus sinensis only gets about a foot long.

In my "community" tank I've got
-Caspian Pond turtle (female)
-Mississpi Map (male)
-Malaysian Box (female)
-Diamondback terrapin (male)
-Yellow Pond turtle (?)
-Scorpion Mud turtle (female)
-Chinese Threadneck (male)

All are smaller species and with the exception of the Yellow Pond (Mauremys mutica), they're all about full grown.
