You have to ask yourself this question first. How much time and space can you allocate for a pond? Money, time and space are important factors and it is not cheap to build a pond of your own.
I have a vision lol .. it's a reasonably small pond (due to kids) with a handful of fish (5-6), plants and so on but we're just a little stuck for physical space - right now at least - our house has a smallish garden - a rough plan can be found -->
http://badgerfruit.homeip.net/album/GardenProject/gardenplan.html - I have numbered the areas that need work.
What I have missed (due to my inability to do technical drawing haha!) is to the right of where #5 is the shed - behind this is a decent sized area (although the plan makes it look really small, that's my bad there!) which is filled with trash from the previous owners. ONCE THIS IS CLEARED, then we will have enough space to put a small pond - say about 40" wide x 24" long and as deep as we can dig (although it will be raised off-ground level).
The problem is, I'm not too hot on the names, or types of plants that we'd want! I like those that look like reeds that stick up out of the water - there will be a pump and filter as it's close to the power supply in the shed - and for the fish, maybe start with something easy like the Orfes we have now.
Anyway, that's the plan and when it's done I know I will be able to find some time to keep up to it properly!
Oh, and just out of interest, I drained, cleaned the liner and removed the lily from the mini-pond last night, the water is crystal clear (I had used tap water so put in some "tapsafe" stuff provided for the aquarium inside) .. anyway, the lily is not going back in as it's just a basket of mud and takes up too much room.
