Hello all,
I am new to pond keeping. The house I moved into already has a well stocked 14ft x 7ft raised pond (Carp & Goldfish etc). The water is a murky green colour, Can anyone suggest a treatment? I already have two ultra violet light filters. Last year I had a blanket weed problem which was treated successfully . The water was crystal clear when I moved in, but although the fish seem happy and healthy the water is murky.. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks.:nilly:

How old are the UV bulbs? If they are run 24/7 they are good for a bout a year....even tho they still light up they are not working.

Oh Ok thanks - well over a year old..

Try that out then and I bet it will help. Do a water change too maybe to help cut some of the greenness out so it dont take as long to clear up. You can also turn off the UV's in the winter since the green usually doesn't grow in the winter and you can get 2 years out the bulbs. The UV's also take care of free floating paracites too so if you have any problems over the winter you may just want to keep them running 24/7.

Ok thanks, what treatments should I add when I re-fill?
Dave.

Something for the chlorine....they also sell stuff that helps with green water but I would just run the UV's and see how that works. May take a little while if its bad...also live plants will help use the stuff in the water that is feeding the algae.

Cheers, have a good day!:)

As already suggested, do a 15% water change per week and replace the UV bulb (I do after 9 months of constant use). Last is to add aquarium poly fiber floss to your mechanical filter. Change the poly fiber floss every day for a week and your water will be clear in no time.

Only if all else fails should you look at additives to the water.

Def. try the UV b4 adding chemicals to the water.
