Thelonious Sphere Monk (yes that was his birth name) was one of the original composers/musicians to really improvise in jazz. He had a unique style that influenced all jazz that came to follow. This can be noticed by listening to early improvisations Monk worked in and then comparing them to any jazz after these were recorded:nilly:
