Musk turtles

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Musk turtles being some of the smallest turtles. Also musk turtles don't bask except for the razorback musk which sometimes do. Not a very aggressive turtles like sliders and snappers. More "bottom walker" than tank swimmer. Given tank room and feeding enough I doubt he would go after your much faster africans.

I agree they are not fast swimmers and are not going to catch your Africans but could take a chunk out of them while there sleeping. If you put him in your tank I would suggest keeping a good eye out for nipped fins or damaged fish. I have a southern painted and a pink belly sideneck in with my loaches and the turtles don't bother them at all. It is really going to depend on the individual turtle whether or not there going to harass the fish so just be careful.

i have a musk w/ a 2" shell and i keep it in a small heated pond with a handful of convict cichlids ranging from 1/2"-2", they leave each other alone.

I have a 5" musk with 2" gourami in a 40 gal. The turtle never bother them at all.

Musk turtles do need to bask , granted they wont bask as much as sliders but they need a place to get out and completely dry off otherwise they will develop shell rot and you will have allsorts of fungus in your aquarium. Ounce for ounce they have one of the heaviest bites, which is a good job they dont grow overly big ! Be carefull when holding one as there necks can stretch as long as the shell making it near impossible to hold without getting bitten, if one decides to do so. They are sometimes called stinkpots due to a gland they have which can produce a nasty smell if startled. (similar to a skunk)
If adding fish then i recommend a "above tank basking area" which can be googled for ideas. You still get the water level full but your turtle has a dry dock so its a win win! Musks are not the best at swimming especially under 2-3" so platforms at different levels of the tank are a must to make sure the lil fella can get to the surface when he wants to. Driftwood branches are a good idea so the turtle can "ladder" up to the surface aswell as making your tank look natural. Good luck they are a great addition to a tank.

I had a 1" baby musk and one of my male bettas killed it they are extremely weak when they still have the egg yolk which mine still had but mine was actually smaller than a penny so urs is probably a little bit bigger but first I would grow it out in a 10 or 20 gallon until it's like 3 inches and the african cichlids will grow much quicker and if ur African cichlids are over 6" they will no doubt kill or eat the musk so good luck
