Muskie fishing tips?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i never fished for them but a friend has and he always had luck with a top water frog or fish, and just worked it real slow.

I've got five for the year so far. One on a 18" walleye, one on a smallmouth, two on walleye jigs and the last was a nice tiger on a tea colored speckled 8" worm Texas style. I been catching several small to moderate sized pikes evey time I go out (jigs/large spinners mainly) but the muskie are a touch slow up here at the moment (for me anyway). If you are not opposed to it catch rock bass and put one on the hook (through upper jaw plate) of a mid to large sized mepps. I can usually do rather well with that rig. If you notice a lot of follows with no strikes try letting the line go slack. Sometime they will swim around and just gently grab the r/b up from the front.

ewurm you should try shallow swimming cranks. Clown or red head pattern, with an erratic retrieve. If that doesnt work use a spinner bait with a grub body and a trailer spoon on it.

also Wobbled deadbaits provides a natural way to present a deadbait as appearing as a sick or injured preyfish

Hooking technique for the baits is as follows, place the barbed point of the top hook of the trace through both lips, the second treble hook placed a couple of inches below pressed lightly into the flank towards the tail. Dip the bait into the margins just before you cast, to see if it floats, if it does then pinch an AAA or swanshot on the trace a foot or so away from it to ensure it sinks.
