Okay everybody. First off, I DO NOT want this to break into a heated political discussion. So NOBODY DERAIL my thread. Keep your opinions to yourselves unless you want to answer my survey.
Now, here is the story of what has happened, so read carefully and thoroughly:
1. On September 30, 2005, the Danish newspaper, Jyllands-Posten, published twelve cartoons by Danish cartoonists about the Muslim prophet, Muhammad. These cartoons were commissioned by the culture editor of the paper, Flemming Rose, in response to several incidents of self-censorship in Europe caused by widening fears and feelings of intimidation in dealing with issues related to Islam [for the complete statement by F. Rose, see www.jp.dk/udland/artikel:aid=3566642:fid=11328/]. The publication of these cartoons led to protests by Danish Muslims, because of deep-seated beliefs that the Prophet Muhammad should never be depicted in any way, for example in drawings or paintings, as this would be disrespectful and therefore an offense to all Muslims. Several of the cartoons made strong statements about the link between the Prophet and terrorism and violence.
You may view the cartoons on this website: www.humaneventsonline.com/sarticle.php?id=12146
The statement above is very long and not necessary to read. I'm just giving a background of the issue. On to the next post.
