bear in mind that just cause yr friend managed to get away with it doesn't mean you would, what kind of gar did he have?

i agree.

especially w/ a longnose gar...the chance of failure is great to begin with...dont worsen the odds. i think 10" in a 55 is pretty risky as well...i had one break it's back in a 30 gallon tank at 10". good luck w/ whatever you choose though and be prepared to upgrade in the very near future...assuming it doesnt kill itself.
