My 125g biotopic project

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you really want to go with something as close to a malawi biotope, I would suggest to get rid of the slate, and go with some big round rocks/boulders in the back. Then a bunch of other smaller rocks all piled up on each other.

It is really all just rocks piled on top of each other and sand. Don't get me wrong, I like the way your tank is turning out, but if you want more natural, go with round rocks instead of slate.

If you do, you can wind up with something like this. This is also a 125. Not my tank but wish it was.

I was kinda thinking that. I didn't want to sound rude by questioning the biotope part.
I want to be be clear: I like how the slate looks. After all, I have slate and driftwood in my 125g African cichlid tank--but it is hardly a true African look.

I would agree that the slate does not make it natural. The Lake looks more like the last picture, but, I would advise you to keep the open space, nice layout, as you have it. The venetus is an open water swimmer. Add quite a bit of Vallisneria grass throughout the open area.
Be careful of the rope fish. When they get bigger they could end up eating all your smaller fish, especially any fry that is born.:naughty:  :headbang2 :nilly:

so is your wife going to put like castles adn little swimmer dudes on her half? :D

but seriously nice tank hope it turns out good.
i thought that biotope was like an enclosed environment where all of the prey species would breed in the tank and it'd be a complete ecosystem.
guess i was wrong.

They're rock dwellers, slate is rock ;)

Yeah, it didn't quite come out the exact way a biotope should have. It won't be a biotopic tank but I think it'll still turn out good.

Nope, the girlfriend will not have any castles and swimmer dudes on her half. We already discussed that. She wanted to put some of the rocks we have from the old tank in the new one for "color" but I told her that was a no. It's either rocks or sand and I already have 100 lbs. of sand :)

Beginning stages. Note eggcrate laid down under the rocks.

I like your slate decor. I have it in mine. Even though it is not natural for Lake Malawi. It is easy to work with during water changes and in re stacking. And the fish love the caves. I was not questioning your choice in decor, just the word "biotope". yes, it will turn out good.

I didnt mean to come off mad sounding. I appreciate the constructive criticism. Not bad for my 2nd tank. I'm still virgin at this
