thanks!

i started with 3 hygros for $5.. 3 crypts for $5. big ball of java moss 5$, few java fern $5, some of the other plants i got for free or traded some stuff to fellow Vancouver aquarists. plants are expansive at the LFS but u can get them dirt cheap if u know people with planted tanks. every week or so they will trim their plants. like myself they need to give them away/sell them or they go into the garbage. i can get lots and lots of plants for dirt cheap if i wait long enough on my local forum. i bought my first plants from the LFS that's why their so expansive..as u first read.. most of the plants u see in my tank are just trimmings from older plants that i replanted next to them. this is also something u can do with ur trimmings if u dont wish to sell/give away or throw out..

if u have anymore questions please feel free to ask.

what kind of substrate should i use? people seem to have flourite and sometimes a layer above it(i think) :screwy:
are there any cheaper alternatives or should i just go with the flourite?

flourite is the most common substrate..its good, but theres other options.
i use a thin layer of ADA Aquasoil on the bottom and a thick layer of eco-complete above it. best bang for ur buck is to make ur own...just search Google and APC.com for the recipe/instuctions.

That sucks so bad bro....those were some awesome fish! Sorry for your loss. :( I went out of town for a couple days myself recently and had bad things happen to my tank. It took about a week for it to recover. That's the only bad thing about planted tanks is that they require constant and consistent maintenance. Do you know what happened that caused the deaths? It may be worth addressing so that similar problems don't happen to others.

I had actually wanted to post a thread regarding maintaining your planted aquarium on vacation. I think it would be really useful and beneficial knowledge.

Otherwise, your tank is always impressive!
