my 18"+ channel

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
great looking cat and bowfin. my combo acts pretty much the same. my cat is 2' and bowfin is 18''. those 2 always tangle after feeding time. then the channel has to get pushy w/ my 2 bullhead only to get bit even more.....

Thanks, guys. Now we have two consistent reports or channel-bowfin contention. Interesting.

it makes sence. it the wild they directly compete for food. big cats like to eat small bullheads. i have found in my collecting that bowfins in that 4-12" were most are gone from sight that they correlate to the bullhead schools. i on multipule lakes and occations have found bowfins from 4-15" directly under bullhead schools. they seem to use the massive cloud of bullheads for cover and they eat small bullheads from the school. i will try to get a video of this.

That would be an awesome vid! Very interesting that channels and bowfin don't get along hmmm. My channel was nearly killed by my jau but that's totally differnt. The jau bit the other channel I had in half and ripped the fin off the one I grew to 28". That channel never bothered anyone, but grew fast as @@@@.

just have to figure out glare. it would be in late summer. i have had bowfins leave head and peck fins only of two channels that were equal or larger then the bowfins. i also see heads of bullheads in bowfin filled waters. i also see bowfin boils around schools of bullheads.

so last night i turned off the sumps return pump to feed floating pellets like i always do. i feed them the pellets in waves so i dont have as much on the bottom of the tank. my gars chew on the pellets and lose more of the pellet if they are too soft. it was kinda late since i was fishing all day. i put in the last bit of pellets and wondered off to help the wife with some job hunting. after a while i came out to shut the lights off and seen they were are ready on moon light mode. i thought to myself, when did i do that? so i went to sleep. around noon today i came out and go to turn on the lights. i saw a belly on its side on the bottom of the tank. so i quickly turned the lights on to see my channel on its side dead and my pbass gulpping air and breathing heavily but weakly. i thought what the hell is going on!!! then i notice the return pump was still off. it was the only form of agitation to get o2 into the tank. the gars and bowfin were fine, but they breath atmospheric air. DAMN IT! the wife, while i was in the bathroom came out and turned the lights off. she didnt know about the filter.

this is the third time someone ment well to help me that resulted in dead catfish! looks like i am on the look out for a new catfish for my gar tank.
