This will serve as my official 180 gallon thread.

As some of you know I picked up a 180 gallon tank yesterday with five 3/4" holes drilled into the bottom of the tank. I am planning on using three CPVC tubes to drain into a DIY sump. The tubes will probably rest 1-2 inches below the top of the tank where I want my water line. From there the piping will lead the water into a five gallon bucket, which is inside a 30 gallon tub. The five gallon will have the pre-filter and bio media in it, which will all drain into the tub and some other various filter media. I am planning on using a Mag 9.5 for a return pump. (Please any advice is welcome or a better pump with a cheaper price)

The first thing I will need to do is reseal the inside of the tank as some of the silicone has rotted almost completely away in some areas. I am also building my own stand (just got home from the store now, should be building it this weekend), which will be made of 4x4's for the corners, 2x6's that will run along the tank itself, and the rest will be made with 2x4's. I will also eventually be building a canopy before I add my fish friends.

First bringing the tank home.

Here you can see the staggered holes in the bottom.

The lumber for my stand. (The ulgy tank is an old underground oil tank, the state is paying to remove them for environmental reasons and we are just waiting for the check to come in.)

So far the stock will be my 8" fire eel, Apollo.

And my 4" CB ansorgii.

I am considering black sand for a substrate and I welcome suggestions on substrate and background. (I think black sand would bring out my eels red more)

Well it took more work then I expected from reading, but I got most of the silicone off the tank for resealing the inner seals. I have extremely cut up fingers, but it will be worth it. :nilly:.... I hope

In all it took probably 3 hours. I had to take breaks because it was so hot out.

Well I did a lot of work over the weekend and so far it was worth it!

I was able to reseal the tank (So far 24 hours with water and no sign of any problems) and I also build the frame for my stand.

As you can see I still have a lot of work to do on the tank, but hopefully I should be done by the weekend..... maybe. I've never done anything even similar to this before. Never worked with wood, silicone, and designing anything. Its truly a learning experience. At the end of this I will be sure to make a post for tips for newbie by a newbie.

Great work. Tank looks like new.

Thanks! So far I have enjoyed working on it.

Made some more progress with the stand for the tank today.

Hopefully I be able to get out and pick up the plywood and such that I will need to construct the rest of the stand to make it look nicer tomorrow.

SO I made some progress on my new tank....

The tank is in its place!

The three pipes in the back are in case of emergency and I am not home, no harm in redundancy! Just in case an overflow becomes clogged or loses suction and I am not home to fix it, or do not notice it in time. And the front two that are capped are just to plug up some holes, and if need be I can take em out if I need to. Tank came pre-drilled from previous owner, but no complaints from me, got the tank for a steal.

Built two of these to work side by side. They are made from 1" PVC pipe. Yes, I have an air check valve that will be going in (I painted them flat black and they are drying now) BTW this was my very first attempt, thoughts? I went with the "teeth" for the intake to reduce the chance of a fish getting into it.
