My 2,000 gal exotic coldwater indoor pond

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
still dangerous size for koi or other fish

Still dangerous to anything under 10”. Of course. But all my koi were almost as big as the catfish. The grass carp were disposable. Super easily replaced. Even those were almost a foot. Nothing in there would’ve been eaten by the catfish.

Dang that pond is clear as day! Having an outdoor pond I always deal with green water even with my UV running. Loving that clarity and gorgeous fish

I actually had a bad algae problem for a while, I had super high powered grow lights over it to help keep the plants in good shape. Trapdoor snails helped a ton. The biggest thing that helped was buying about 20 huge freshwater mussels. They would feed off the algae before it could grow further and kept it in check combined with the UV light.
Thank you!

Thanks for that recommendation! I really need to try out those freshwater mussels. Do they need substrate or can they be on bare bottom? Did you buy yours online?

I started them on bare bottom and they definitely seemed to help. When I put the substrate in they really worked magic though. I would recommend substrate, but it doesn’t seem to be a must. They filter about 10 gallons of water per hour according to some sources. I don’t know the exact species but the lady I bought them from said they don’t reproduce fast unlike other mussels and are easy to keep in check. She said that some mussels can have parasitic offspring but these did not. I noticed no adverse effects and I had them in there for at least a year. I bought them on eBay, I can try to find the seller I bought them from and PM you her username. They were surprisingly cheap and were huge. Bigger than saltwater mussels that people eat. Probably 3-4” in length.

I’d like to know more about these non parasitic mussels too!
Great looking pond, but intex would keep me up all night worrying!! No issues?
That was the second iteration of the pond. I do not recommend it. It was prone to leaks especially with the substrate. Lots of problems with that design.
