My 20h Riparium

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I got fish! I now have 9 Golden Pencilfish, 6 Tail Spot Pygmy Cories, and 3 Otocinclus. They look great, all fish are schooling together, I assume to everyone having a black lateral line. Love it.

I did a little thinning. The Alternanthera in the planter was not making it. The Ludwigia repens is finally taking hold and growing. Most of the plants seem stagnant, but I am pretty sure this is normal acclimation.

However...

Sedum roots! by Supracoracoideous, on Flickr
The Sedum spp. began throwing roots in a day or two! All opinions pointed to death, but I am optimistic now. Might just be a boom before it rots out?

For comparison, the Alternanthera and Tradescantia pallida stems have...

I would love to hear more opinions on what would help!

Thanks, as always.

Nice work!

That will be funny of you prove everybody (including me) wrong with that Sedum.

Those pygmy cories are super cute. That is one of my favorite aquarium fish.

Thanks! I couldn't believe it when the Sedum sp. started throwing roots out after a day! Also, the Moss Rose, which was another I thought would just die, is blooming? It is going the opposite way I thought. I cant wait for things to grab hold so I can really know what is surviving and what is actually growing.

What do you think about the Alternanthera and Tradescantia pallida not having any roots yet? Is that normal? its nearly two weeks in...

Things are still going pretty well. I re-arranged my planters and trimmed and replanted to make things look better.

Here is the Alternanthera ficoidea 'Party time' and Purple Queen. The Party time is growing well. Most of the leaves are newer and the roots have finally come it. The Purple Queen is holding on, but there are still no roots. It does bloom, though.

The Geranium is holding on and has a couple new leaves. I believe it is rooting, but didn't want to pull on it much, just in case. Still waiting this one out...

The Moss Rose is doing well! It has bloomed a few times now. There is a plant in the planter and in the trellis, both going strong.

The Sedum is also doing well. I removed nearly all of it and started over in the trellis. This pic is where I cut off from one of the planted stems. You can see how it has branched quite a bit. Most of the stems looked like this.

Now, another waiting game... I think this will look really nice once it fills in. As long as I don't start losing plants.
The Purple Queen and the Geranium are the only ones I am a little worried about now, though.

Thanks for all the comments! Keep them coming.

is the purple queen known for being a good riparium plant or did you just think it was cool to throw in there? i have 2 huge ones out side and i thought it would be good to bring them in before it gets too cold, and so i can put them in my riparium that i'm setting up in a few months...

Hey that is still looking great. That 'Party Time' Alternanthera looks like a great plant for adding some red to a riparium. Do you see many new roots on that one. There are a number of Alternanthera that are used as pond plants, so a lot of them do like to water.

It seems that the whole layout could benefit from a taller, fuller plant right in the middle area. Do you have anything that might grow to fill that in some more?

Purple Queen should work well. It is not really doing much yet for me, though. Time will tell.

Thanks! I am loving the Party time! haha It took a little bit, but now the roots are coming in great. I lost the one that was in the planter. Not sure if it would take now that it has roots or not. I will probably try the rooted base in a planter once I want to take the top off.
I do not have anything in with the L. repens. Once that fills in a lot, I may strip it from the cup, leaving it just on the trellis, and add a tall plant. Was going more for a framed look. Is that the opposite thinking?

Really nice. I gotta try one of these one day. What kind of lighting are you using?

Thanks! It is a 24" Hagen Glo double fixture. Working great.
