Yeah if you have a smaller overflow that is not running a full shipon, you should be good. Also the full shipon isn't going to stop until it grabs air so don't forget about that.
I would lower the intake on the sump pump or run a little more water just to be sure not to run it dry.
The best thing to do is when everything is running, have he sump a little low on water. The turn off the pump. A little water from the tank will keep flow but should stop. Then you can fill the sump to the highest safe level. Then turn on the sump pump and the level will drop a bit. This is your highest safe running water level. Higher then this point it will over flow with a power outage.
