It seems the fish are inseparable.. most of the time. I've yet to see a hint of aggression. Think they'll spawn?

Do you think my filtration will be sufficient?
the filtration should be fine.
i doubt they will spawn just because the johanni is likely the only male and its not common for melanochromis to interbreed with metriaclima(if they did they would be hybrids, which really wouldnt be that bad). if you got any variety of male metriaclima zebra your current ones will likely spawn with him though.

Filtration sounds fine to me, then again my 29g has whisper 60 and an Emperor 280. Question is what do you have for media(sponges, carbon, pot scrubbers, etc.) in your filters?

I just use the Marineland filters, mix of carbon/potscrubber :)

2 filters in the 150 and 1 filter in the 100.

You think if the tank is maintained correctly and there are no aggression issues my 29g will be fine for them when they mature?
they look to already be mature, so yes. :D
you could probably add about 2-3 if youd like.

Thanks. You guys are helpful. I got flamed pretty hard over at cichlid-forums because I had a 29g.

What kind of bottomfeeder fish could I use? Would one be beneficial?

ive heard worse, most of the time there arent too many problems with a tank that small. its just better. you may want to think about getting some type of bottom feeder like a synodontis cat to help clean up. also make sure you dont feed them too much meaty foods, it will make their color very bland and can clog their digestive tract. feed mostly vegetable matter.

I've been feeding them Hikari pellets, and I have a variety pack of frozen cubes I give them.

Would a small catfish work? I don't like plecos, last time I had one it got like a foot long and all it did was crap, constantly. lol

Right now I am observing one of my cichlids re arrange his dwelling. lol

He is taking the crushed coral substrate from one spot and piling it up in front of his area.

How entertaining.

Mine do that to me all the time, I clean the tank, smooth out the gravel and when I wake up I can see the bottom of the glass in some places. I also had problems with the Cichlid forum group as well. I have a old 30gal with African Cichlids in it, they didn't like the fact that I had a beautiful purple and orange hybrid! They felt that he should of been fed to some other fish or flushed. ahh well.
