A few questions:

a) Why do taro plants clear the water?

b) Won't some of the fish you throw in there die in the winter? What is the lowest nighttime temp you get in the winter?

A) I have no idea about the taro plants i just like how they look and for shade.....

B) Well down here in southwest Florida it may only snap into the low 40s a few times a year.... Its 5' deep to try to keep it warm in the winter and cool in the summer.... maybe they will we will have to see.....

Nice looking Taro. Do they live year round there?

Might give the black a try next year, it makes the pond look very tropical.

A few weeks ago I got 2 taro (green one) and gave one of them into the pond (liner without soil), compleately bare rooted (with very long roots).

The plant collapsed just in 3-4 days and had to got it back to the soil outside and recovered also very quickly.

Does that mean that I can try it again but potted, next time in the water?
Any advices please. Thanks.

well im realy not sure... i never thought too much about them just stuck the in the rocks (in the water) and they grew like wild fire.... was it windy? mine do blow down... they arent that strong when the leaves are huge... i gave 5 or 6 of my buddies some of it and they just stick them in the rocks or wedge them in the corner ish and they do great.... just my 2 cents...:)

They may need a little support. Those big leaves act like a sail in any wind and can topple over w/o any base support.

Also, what exposure where they grown in? I have a friend that moved an elephant ear outside and the difference in sun/shade exposure caused it to collapse, it recovered in a few weeks.

Thanks superscrewed,
Taros are quite rare here. It came to me after a 3 days of transport in a box, with big leaves and curved stems because of the packing. May be I was too quick to place it in the water, the same day. Yes I hope.

So, since winter has started here, I will try again next time in spring. They are planted in the garden now and still giving nice leaves. Will let them survive the winter there. Thanks again
