my 5.5gallon pico

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
thanks. as for what i have on the tank i have an ac70 hob, a small power head and a diy skimmer. as for setting up a 3 gallon pico you dont really need a skimmer and the 30g filter would work good. you will just have to make sure you top off the tank alot depending on how much evaporates. i usually need to top my tank up about 2 times a week sometimes once a week and i do 1.5-2gallon water changes every week or week and a half

Seriously? That sounds encouraging. Everything I've read says how terrible it will be with water changes every other day and frequent top-offs. But weekly is what I do now on fw 3gallon. I can handle that.

Do think it's easier to keep hardy coral only 3-gallon or hardy fish-only?

As long as you have determination to keep up with the top offs and water changes you can do it with no problem. I would go with some zoanthids, maybe some mushrooms, also a sexy shrimp or 2 and some small snails and blue legged hermits. For lighting I would get 4 or 6 3watt Crees and have them on dimmable driver so like that if you ever get any corals that require lots of light u can increase it. I'm going to be setting up a 12gallon edge and am gonna order a 12 3watt Cree kit for it. I have heard a lot of good things about rapidled.com for LEDs so I'm probably gonna give it a try. Glad I can help

Have you ever entertained the idea of making a sump for a nano/pico under 10g? That way you could hide another 10-20 below and have more cushion for parameter swings?

I was thinking about having an algae turf scrubber, like I have on my 125 turtle tank, which would eliminate phosphates and nitrates once it got going. Leaving me only to have worry about top offs.

yeah i was thinking about drilling my 12gallon fluval edge and setting up a refugium with liverock and somekinds of macro algea.
never seen an algae turf scrubber set up on a sw tank.

I just bought the picotope 3 gallon. I plan to cycle it with live sand and live rock until I get back from vacation August 23-28 then I can start loading it. Can I do that or will the live stuff die off without waste/food/nutrients?
