My 6 New Pygocentru Ternetzi (Gold Piranha)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i've never seen ternetzi at that size. the smallest i've seen were about 3" and had a very blunt fat, with hundreds of dark black spots, more than any other pygos. that's when they were first available in the states, at $350.00 each, back in 1999. I flew to Detroit just to see if I could buy some...

I've never seen one that small either. the smallest I've seen on sale was about 3" or so, $40 each. now I'm kicking myself in the nuts for not buying them when they were available.
at your size is really hard to tell what it really is, but they grow very fast and in a few months we should be able to tell if they are pygos or serra.
best of luck and for sure to post pix and updates on the piranha section. :)

This is going to crack you up.:ROFL::ROFL::ROFL::ROFL::ROFL:

I went searching for the pygocentrus Ternetzi. I thought I really found some.

When people kept commenting, it made me do a little more research. :irked:

I do not have the pygocentrus ternetzi. I have the serrasalmus spilopleura.:WHOA:

Come to find out you can't even get the pygocentrus ternetzi right now they are protected.

I even seen the ones online going for $60 (out of stock of course).:(

These are not what I wanted, but I am a piranha lover and I it will be fun watching them grow.

I'm not aware of that pygocentrus ternetzi are protected...well actually the ternetzi that we are know of is actually pygocentrus nattereri, just a different variant of it. it's not as common as typical wild reds as they are only available from few locations. you can find larger ones available (Shark Aquarium) but not baby ones.
what you have are most likely not serrasalmus spilopleura either, they are actually serrasalmus maculatus. serrasalmus maculatus are often called gold spilo or gold piranha but they are not spilopleura; that's two different species. macs are much more common than true spilos.
this is what a true spilo will look

and this is what mac looks like when bigger

you can find more information about them from the links below.

Just to clear it up a bit - these are tank raised Serrasalmus Spilopleura. We don't have ternetzi at the moment (actually haven't carried them yet, although we will if they are available on one of the SA imports we do this year (only 3-4 times a year from this local).

They are awesome fish, and while you do need to watch them, these tank raised ones that are gorwn together tend to be much better than the wild ones (these Gold -seem- to settle down a lot once they hit the 2 inch mark)... but I haven't grown them past about 2.5"

I did not know that they were protected either, I found out from Ash at Pet Station in MI. when I was inquiring about these fish. Don't know how true it is, but I haven't found any.
