With the 1" pipe going into the larger pipe it creates a trap, so both ends of the 1" pipe are always under water and you never lose vacuum. Hope this explains it for you, if you need any more clarification just let me know.
 
So the 3" pipe in the tank is disguised like a tree trunk?
Clever. So, since the 3" pipe is capped and the overflow (1") extends down into the 4" also capped, the pipe doesn't empty when the return is off and starts up normal when it's turned on?
I'm digging it. I could do the same in my tank and disguise the pipe to look like a tree...so doing this.

real interesting thread. What do your nitrates sit at with that algae scrubber?
 
No clue...I actually don't ever test. They seem healthy and they breed so I never messed with testing. Maybe i'll buy a test kit out of curiosity. BTW the algae scrubber works like a charm, it get tons of algae growing on it.

are you using it for nitrates?
 
No, it keeps the bulk of the algae out of the display tank, and pretty much everywhere but the scrubber.
