yes it is a 75... the box that it was in was twice the size of a 55 gallon.

No it is a 55g, Go get a tape measure and measure the length(48") then measure the depth a.k.a. width(12.5") and then measure the height(21"). Now take the length x depth x higth and divide by 231, this will give you volume in gallons. Although this isn't even true volume for that you would need to use the interior dimensions.

Sorry for the bad news, research is the key though :)
 
That sponge you have in the 10 gallon tank needs the clear tube to run correctly. Right now the air isn't pulling any water through the sponge and is only relying on the very small amount of water movement the air is creating.

With the tube the air forms a big bubble and another big bubble underneath it and the water inbetween those two bubbles is forced up, but without it this doesn't happen.

Very good catch X24, also by elevating the sponge off the substrate you will also make the sponge more effective.
 
I run my tanks with sponge filters and very few have the "clear tube" in place. They work fine that way for me.
