Fish are still growing nicely. The dominant male just keeps getting more and more colorful.
Some of my smaller ones have the real rich blue, especially at certain angles, but it seems that as they get bigger the red seems to become more prominent. I like the red because I think it contrasts the blue really well. I love the different colors of longears from different parts of the country. They were what got me hooked on natives.
Native fish and aquaponics would solve invasive species and water depletion. I am already on board!
People don't realize just what they're missing in their backyard. Once I caught my first longear, I was hooked on natives. One would think that anyone with a SA/CA cichlid appreciation would naturally be interested in sunfish. There is such an awesome variety. I have a YouTube friend that just caught a mud sunfish for his tank and it looks so cool. Plus, if you like that hardcore attitude of the SA/CA cichlids then you'd naturally enjoy the Green sunfish. I have yet to see and cichlid that looks as intimidating as a green sunfish, and they can back up their hardcore looks too.
Theres peacefull species like Crappie, Fliers and Blackbanded sunfish, and then theres the aggressive species like Green Sunfish, Dollar sunfish and Redbreasts; I agree we really have a lot to choose from. Centrarchid on Nanfa will even tell you about some species of Bluegill like the Handpainted and Florida which have spots or purple sheen that rivals Cichlids.
