My 800 Gallon Plywood tank build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
And his first coat was resin alone, then he strengthen the "LAMINATE" with fiberglass...1.5" of plywood form, and then a "LAMINATED" liner in essence.

This thing is a MONSTER of strength...

I guess somebody who cannot wrap their brain around "LAMINATES" wouldn't understand...

The fiberglass skin that is "LAMINATED" to the inside is not just a waterproof liner, it become a structural component of the piece...

this is not a cheesy piece of bendy plywood,

I can only imagine the weight of this beast dry...:headbang2:headbang2:headbang2

Lol--Trust me, I understand perfectly. This internal shell is still flexible though, and will transfer this lateral pressure directly to the wood, which is completely unsupported.

WOW... This thread is true Monster project and I see some people trying to create a Monster Problem with the way it's constructed.

For those of you who beleive in the way it's being built... continue to show your support, for those who don't... sit back and see what happens since you have clearly made your points (Although have been proven wrong already with Solid numbers)

It is a great project and I for one am waiting for the finished product :D

I'd be curious to hear from the OP what weight of cloth was used.

The epoxy does add some strength as it does cross link much better than poly or vinyl ester resins. But ulimately at this depth the combination of the plywood and the saturated cloth is where the majority of the strength is going to come from.

Marinelife- I do wish you best of luck and was only politely trying to express doubt from a spectators prospective. As I said I hope I'm wrong, but I still stand by what I said.

Not adding myself to the naysayers but trying to keep the arguments straight in my head.

I said it before and I'll say it again -- I'm glad to see somebody trying such a tall plywood tank. I hope it works.

is 1.5" acrylic overkill?

I think the word you were looking for was AWESOME

Okay.. maybe

I can't wait for this tank to be done, or atleast see some more pics.

To the OP I was actually curious of how you layered your Ply in the Corners.. did you just double them up or interlock them? I can see alot of piece of mind if they are interlocked together. I'm going to jump on the band wagon here and say that More Pix are a Must :D

And pretty much everyone here seems to have at least some understanding of stressed skin applications. I think the concern lies in the flexibility of cured epoxy resin and plywood itself.

I think there have been some valid concerns raised in this thread. I have read other threads on this forum where people have raised concerns before a project is completed as to avoid disaster. Somehow or another these concerns have been criticized in this thread and I'm not sure I understand why.

On that note, I do want to comment to the OP that any of the problems raised in this thread can be addressed after the fact. Unless the tank completely explodes during the initial fill, which I doubt will happen, any excessive bowing can be dealt with.

The absolute worst case scenario as I see it is that dimensional lumber can be attached to the outside of the tank with construction adhesive and pocket holes.
