Hey, just wanted to pop in here and say that I just repaired and reinforces an acrylic tank. It might be worth it to look into fixing the tank. If you go to a plastics shop, you can get the glue for $5 and they will more than likely give a few pieces of acrylic to patch it. It takes about 30 minutes and it is super easy to do. Might be worth a shot. It would at minimum buy you some time before you buy another tank.
The pics I have suck. But it is as simple as taking your time and making sure you have the right tools. I didn't have the clamps I needed, paper towels or the extra hand I could have used. Overall, I was glad that i took the time to fix it instead of replacing it. Ugly or not, it saved me from having to buy a new tank.
The tank is an unknown maker but I am almost certain it was a homemade job or at least not a reputable company and was very old. I just jumped on it because at the price I could'nt pass it up. I don't remember but I think I payed like $250.00 for the tank and maybe another $100.00 in plumbing. The guy had no idea what he was selling (or maybe he did )
As stated before a tank of this size I am too nervous to fix it, even if I reinforce everything else on it. I talked to my LFS yesterday and am in the process of negotiating a price on a new glass with starfire on front.
The aro was a silver but I got him at probably 4" and powerfed the hell out of him until he was big enough to be housed with the Armatus. 16" at time of death I have a few pics of him and I don't mind taking some pics of the tank. I have to ferry and aircraft down to Colombia tomorrow moring so if I don't get it done tonight it might be a little while. If thats the case I will post a new thread just so you guys can see the aftermath of buying an old cheap acrylic....
Thanks for all the support. Presently I am at $1600.00 for an 96X30X24 with the LFS. I've been using Glasscages as my "gun point"... I am trying to get the 96X36X24 or 96X36X30 down to a resaonable cost.
I will keep everyone posted. The Aro really is ashame. After a very short time with my Aro named "Aro" I realized why so many people get attached to them. They really are incredible fish to own.
Wow, talk about a nightmare! Sorry about your tank and fish!
Sucks that it was acrylic, glass seams are easy to fix if they go, but I agree with you that it's too risky to try to fix a failed acrylic tank seam on a tank that size. Especially since you don't know how old it is or who made it to begin with.
