now that was interesting
BTW just a passing thought "can the mods create a subforum for characins in the other monsters forum then at least people wouldn't make this mistake repeatedly"
or they have left it as it is so that every time someone does make a mistake he learns at least sumthing

I suggested that and got Banned for it.....

i hope i don't get banned for it
anyways there is always the possibility that you may have suggested in a very different way, if you know what i mean
good thing you are back its an advantage to the gar keeping community

what i would suggest, since most of this entire forum isn't arranged phylogenetically anyway, is to have a subforum for the "false gars" here in THIS forum that way people will see it associated with gars (which doesn't help with the true separation from Lepisosteidae, but clearly that ship sailed a long time ago) but probably get the idea that what they are dealing with are not members of Lepisosteidae.

people won't instinctively look in the "other monster fish" for a needlefish/pike-characin/etc forum, but will come to the gar forum since that is what their LFS (and common names) call the fish. may as well make the separation possible via compromise--
