55g actually all i could afford on such short notice, but one oscar it is :) any suggestions when picking out a new oscar? store, price, health, activity, certain breed, size?

I can not advocate a Oscar in a 55g, so unless you can move up to a 75g, or better a 95 in the next 6 or 7 months I would not get an oscar.

Oscar long tall fish, and very very fast growers, in a year a well kept oscar be an easy 10" in 2 years 12", tall and thick, 55g just can not house him happily.

thats sad man... start a thread on 'stocking a 55g' and you will get some great ideas for fish that will work long term, possibly a lone grammodes, salvini, hrp group, Nicaraguan, or a jack Dempsey would work.

i can bump to a 75 gallon by middle of next summer :) I want an active friendly fish, i heard oscars are kind of like dogs, my brothers is small, but pretty cool. What kind of attitude do Jack Dempseys have? and are they generally smaller? I heard they will beat on other fish, but thats not a problem. Will they eay like a oscar, one quick chomp!

theres not much than can match up to an Oscars personality tbh... you seem like a very responsible person anyhow, as long as you know you will need to upgrade in due time I would say go for an Oscar. if you want a colourful one take your time and search around, wild Oscars are cool but wont have the colour of a regular lfs Oscar, I personally like reds, I have 2 reds a gold Oscar and a tiger Oscar living in my 300g tank.

Sorry to hear that he didn't make it.

A 55g would be a fine grow out tank for an oscar until you can get a used 75g+ tank or new one by next summer.

The only other fish that I found laying on its side are Crenicichla johanna (johanna pike cichlid).

I have found green terrors to be personable, but they do not lay on their side like oscars. A 55g would work out for 3-4 years for a male GT since they are slow growers, until it gets to about 8" in total length. You could also put in buenos aires tetras or rosy barbs as dithers.
