My "Aequidens metae", part 2

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
^ Now I don't have tank space for another six Aequidens. LOL.

Chris, the saddle doesn't appear to extend into the dorsal, so A. diadema it appears to be.

So my question is: are Aequidens diadema collected in Peru? I ask because I've been reading online and it seems that the collection point is the main deciding factor between A. diadema and A. sp Janero Herrera.

According to Wet Spot, these fish were wild-caught in Peru. If there are no Aequidens diadema collected in Peru, they may in fact be JH. I guess I could always wait until they spawn and then see if they are mouthbrooders.

If they are actually JH, I got a hell of a deal!

You should be able to tell before the spawning, there's a big color difference between the two....And now you're making me wanna order some, because I need to replace the 1 A. sp Janero Herrera that died when I get my 4 from Rapps.

Can you get more pics, Ryan?

They are still a bit shy. They came out and ate bloodworms earlier but the second I move they dart back behind the sponge filters. I'll see how they're feeling in the morning.

I don't honestly know if they're JH -- I'm assuming their price would have reflected it. But after looking at pics of JH I don't see a huge difference in the young fish, and the ones people got from Rapps and posted here don't seem to have a saddle extending into the dorsal as Chris suggests, so I'm stumped as to how you'd really ID them.

So here's a couple pics of what's supposed to be A. sp Janero Herrera.

I rarely have seen them flare up enough to get a look at their dorsal, however in the top two pics you can see the saddle mark bleeding up into the dorsal fin.

Yeah, no diadema from Peru ... only one of the group from down there I know of is JH. The black in the dorsal might not be as prominent when young or stressed. That first pic of Sinister's you can really see it well.

I might be driving down to the Wetspot this Sunday, just to take a look. Would really be cool if they were A. JH.

uploadfromtaptalk1382121302702.jpgDSCN8120.JPGDSCN8051.JPGRyan, tis is my roughly 2 year old "diadema" that I got from my LFS, wild imported from Peru, I know for a fact they came from Peru, because he had other Peruvian species from the same import at the time. Whether JH or not, its a really pretty fish. The first photo is just a regular camera phone shot. The other 2 were taken with a real camera, they were just darkened slightly because the flash washed them out a bit, no other color enhancement. When he is happy, he really looks like this when the lights hit him right.
