It's really hard to sex them at that age. You'll pretty much have to wait until it's older unless the person you bought it from knows what temp it was incubated at.

I think the basking is an artifact of captivity or something we just don't observe in the wild. I have kept and maintained several in outdoor ponds in breeding groups and have often seen them out basking. It seems to happen more often with the smaller ones but they all seem to do from time to time. I personally think they probably do this in the wild but have the ability to be much more discreet there. Another thing mine do more than I thought they ever would is consume vegetation. They will devour water lettuce and water hyacinth. It would be a lot easier to maintain them sometimes if they would just read and follow the same husbandry guidlines we utilize. Remember, sometimes they do what they do inspite of us.

Water lettuce? Where can I get it? I love to leave stuff in the tank for him so when I'm not around he can have stuff to snack on.
Also You have any pics of them? How big is your pond? How did you design it to meet the needs of the turtles?

You can get water lettuce at most pond supply places. It is really cheap and spreads quickly. I use large plastic stock tanks because they are sturdy enough to stand up to large aquatic turtles. They are at least 6' diameter and I try to use weighted down plastic milk crates for basking platforms and haul out areas. I will look for some pictures. They usually bail back into the water pretty quick when they see you. They probably feel VERY vulnerable.

Mine are surrounded by tortoise enclosures so they have no place to go. I know a friend of mine has had trouble keeping his males and females separated. They will swap ponds to come together but they have never made a run for it.
