My Alligator Snapping Turtle

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
awesome snapper! about the uvb- common snappers and alligator snappers do not require uvb like sliders, softies, sidenecks, and others. the calcium comes from their diet. (info from Reptiles Magazine feb. and april 2013) as a matter of fact, you will almost never see a snapper of either species basking in the wild. great specimen! looking forward to seeing its progression!

Thanks for the info! What can I feed him to make sure he's getting enough calcium? Also how can I determine the gender of him/her?

snappers will eat ANYTHING! fish, small mammals, birds, snakes, crayfish, other turtles (huge part of diet of alligator snappers studied in Louisiana) I would feed as varied a diet as possible. Avoid only muscle meat from mammals though such as steak or other beef muscle. as for sex, all turtles can be sexed the same. If the cloacal opening is right on the edge of or just past the plastron, you have a female, male cloacal openings are well beyond the edge of the plastron. if you are unsure, post a pic here of the snapper on its back. focus on the tail region.

Snappers do need the right lighting. You almost never see them basking in the wild because you aren't out there all the time. They do bask, and during that time they are recieving a wide spectrum of lights. In captivity they should be given the same.

That thing is so cool, and it sounds like you are prepared for it. Man you have so many cool reptiles!

Wish I could get one but they are illegal here.
wait, WAT????? so much for moving to Germany, then

Zfishies, have you given it uvb? I've seen some nasty deformities when not given it. Its rare, but its especially hard on babies.
