My Amphilophus Lyonsi Journal

The dorsal spot doesn't develop until maturity starts to set in.
I had some young ones from COA, but gave them away when I moved.
They are from the genus Amphilophus, so the resemblance to others of the genus is no coincidence.
I hope to catch some here soon.
When in Milwaukee I had them growing out in a 6 ft tank, and did every other day 30 - 40% water changes to keep nitrate down.
Where they live in Panama, nitrates in waters I have tested are non-detectable, and I believe good growth is dependent on having water as nitrate free as possible.

Yeah I've loved every second of them so far. Looks like great minds think alike when sourcing em haha.
Getting prepped for what I ultimately want the tank to be like one day and wondering if y
all think this stock would be alright...

I know this is a heavy load but I think its manageable. The Raphael isn't my fav but he don't hurt nobody and my mom's fish she picked out like 3 years ago. The syno isn't aggressive but is rather territorial. Also any recommendations on good power heads or wave makers? I want some more flow and/or surface agitation. Thoughts? Think the bioload really is too much or fish wont mix well?

I think as soon as you get a pair they will shred everything else in there. I think you saw Caspers shenanigans during breeding and attacking even me. Amphs are on a different level of aggression and I have discovered its either a pair if lucky or one and done. Or a giant tank stocked to Rift lake levels.
shenanigans with Casper is one heck of an understatement. With lyonsi i've heard and seen some people have better sucess when a male has options. Wish there was more keeper of this species same with sagittae.
Edit: I also thinking that with a 6 ft tank that there would be enough room for a second female to do alright incase the big male goes psycho on his other female. These fish aren't easy to source as you know with casper too
I was actually going to order some Lyonsi from COTA for my empty 125, but ran across that Festae and plans changed.... humm get another 125....
They 125s are still on sale for 499... but out of filters so gonna have to wait for a bit. They are going to be my next project tho so I will live vicariously thru yours for the moment.
