My Amphilophus Sagittae journal

In this thread I will be keeping track of my group of five Amphilophus Sagittae. I got them from Jeff Rapps. They are about two inches long now. They will be living with a group of nine swordtails.

The tank is a 6ft long 125gal with an FX4 and an Aqua Clear 110 for filtration, also an Eheim heater and air pump. Tank has gravel substrate with some rocks and driftwood.

I started them from the get go on NLS. They are eating it with gusto so that's great. At the moment they are getting fifty percent Ultra Red, twenty-five percent each algeamax and normal.





Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Love this species-

Have (4) growing out: 2, pink, 1 creamsicle, 1 blueish.

Beautiful as adults and my adults did fine in mixed communities.

Wish I could find one that was 50/50 orange and white

It appears that a 6ft 125gal tank is not big enough for 3 male swordtails. The two others picked this one to death I am thinking. Found him on the bottom of the tank this morning. Was fine last night. All of his fins are mangled.

The two remaining male's stay on thier end of the tank now. If one or the other crosses mid tank it gets chased back to its side.

Sorry to see that. Swordtails are pretty aggressive in my opinion, more than often accounted for. I think best strategy is either one male, or many males to distribute aggression. I have two small males in my 55, and before I added all the other fish, one would bully the other quite a lot. Now he seems distracted. But I was surprised at about 1" these guys are feisty!
I also have a wild caught X. Kallmani that bullied my nice red lyretail sword almost to death in a 45 gallon. Had to remove the red guy. That kallmani picks on the rest of the fish now, but it is so nice I don't want to give away.

I agree, I can’t seem to keep more then one male swordtail in my 150g.
