My amphilophus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
thanks guys....I took him out and measured him just a couple weeks ago when the new fish arrived and was surprised to see that he's still only about 9-9.5" SL.

Nice, I'm looking foward to seeing more pics as they grow.

When I got my RD back from my buddy a couple of months ago his hump had almost disapeared and it's just starting to come back recently. The stress of the move and change of environment take a toll on them. Physco started pumping back up shortly after I introduced the Tiger Barbs and he started activly hunting them.

Looking good!!!

Nice Amphilophus collection. You like the white ones it seems.

Thanks...and funny you should mention that. I do like the white ones but when I got this recent order there was a bit of a miscommunication between Jeff and I. I had wanted a male labiatus or sagittae with a very deep, vibrant, bright orange/red with some black also if possible. However "deep" orange was the only descriptive word I really used so he picked out the male sagittae due to its deep creamy orange color and also for the fact that it has some of the blue coloration on the side, which was something else we'd talked about. I am very happy with this sagittae, but I definitely want to get my hands on at least one or two RD types that are piebald and one or two that are deep, deep orange/red. And of course also a barred or two....sooo many fish :D lol

this is actually the main reason I want the xiloaensis to breed...so I can grow up the fry, hand pick the ones I like to keep and sell or cull the others. :)

Yeah I really think the environment is the main reason. First the move over here, losing the other xiloaensis (they appeared to show a lot of pair-like behavior but never spawned) and then he was practically alone in the tank for a few weeks with just the 2 bristlenose which he never even really saw so there was nothing else there for him to show dominance over. Now there are these new fish in the tank and I've also been playing around with the decor a lot since moving over here. I have it the way I want it now though for the most part. I'm just waiting for the logs to become fully water logged so I can arrange them how I like and get rid of the pieces I don't want to keep.

Looking good Jason. How is the aggression?

He gives the occasional chase to the other fish..pretty much to all of them though it's never anything more than a short "get out of my way" kind of burst. The only real problem was when I first got the Rapps order, I had tried to keep the sagittae in the same tank. Brutus took much less kindly to the male sag being in there. There was never any damage dealt out but then again I didn't keep the sag in there but for a couple of days. The sag was constantly hidden out in one of the clay pots I put in as refuge for the females. I took 2 8" (I think) clay pots, hammered out the bottom and turned them backwards so the short end was sticking out. This way the females (well, the smaller fish in general) could retreat should Brutus get particularly annoyed, and it was also to gauge how well Brutus would take to the new fish being in the tank. Since the sag was the only one he really didn't like, I moved him out. Brutus doesn't really seem to mind the male carpintis or male synspilum being in there, though we'll see how that continues to play out as the other fish get larger or should any breeding occur.

Thanks everyone...yeah I've always been very fond of Brutus...that's why I kept him over his brother though they were both awesome. :)
