My aquarium disaster

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i hope you fix your problem before you restock though

WOW, thanks for the input guys ! I really really appreciate it....

I will be checking the ammonia levels soon, and as for the concrete, I have heard many talks about it, and how long is the appropriate wait period for the chemicals to wear off ?

And aside from this, so the water depth have nothing to do with this incident ? So I suppose, it is ok to keep catfish in a 1.5 meters water depth tank ?

The longer the better for the curing time. A little white vinegar will help cure the concrete, but you don't want to have any inhabitants in the tank during this time. Frequent water changes to clear out the offending chemicals, as much as you can do without breaking your bank, percentage wise. I think (don't quote me here) that the alkalinity from the cement mix is the worst culprit. Don't know how to check that though. Are you getting a white film on your glass? This may be an indication of the alkalinitiy. maybe.

As far as water depth......I cant' see why that would affect anyone. However if you are really concerned, you can texture the bottom of your tank so that you have some shallower areas.

Good luck with this, hope it works out for the best. Look forward to seeing pictures of a well stocked tank in the coming months!!

Mr_Alpeter, thank you for the thorough information.

When my catfish died, I did find white films all over their bodies. But not on the arowanas though. Maybe coz they have a whiter body color, I couldn't see clearly...

Maybe the problem is that I did not cover the tank with floor tiles ? So, it's just cement....

Water changes will not be a problem for me, as I have a deep well, so it's just the mater of consuming more time...

That would be my question too - is the concrete sealed? Not only can it leach chemicals, but it can also leach salt (it's called Efflorescence) - enough might have been harmful? I dunno how likely that is, just thought I would toss that out there since its concrete + water

What should I seal it with ? Would ceramic floor tiles suffice ?

A pool paint/sealant might work, but I really don't know how that will affect the tank itself or the potential inhabitants. Somewhere in the DIY section someone may have the answer to this question.
Have to say I am a bit jealous about you having a well. I wasn't thinking about the water consumption before starting to DIY Rock building, Fortunately I don't see the bills, I just make the money for my wife to pay them!!!

LOL.... It's because I live in Indonesia, so water and temperature are not really a problem here...

I read from other threads, they seem to be using epoxy for the concrete tanks.... Would this be ok ?

your depth is fine, for fish like that its usuually foot print you worry about. at the national Zoo in washington dc they have aros in weith there stingray exhibit and the depth is only 3 or 4 ft but the foot print is something like 15 x 20

I don't see why the epoxy wouldn't work. I would still recommend a good curing time though. If I had to guess at a good time....maybe 6 weeks with the daily water changes after it sets. May not need that with the epoxy though. Not very experienced in that department. Good luck with this tank. Hope to see pics when it is restocked!
