Yesterday when I was changing my tankwater, my largemouth bass got through the divider and start chasing my armatus. The bass managed to mildly mangle the tail into shallow streaks. Today when i woke up, I say that the tail got alot worse and the rips widened and made "triangle cuts" at the end of the tail. I tail seemed to be gone one part of it overnight. The damaged area is also darker than the undamaged part of the tail. I'm not sure if it's fin rot cuz the wound is not white or very dark. I added some salt. Should I leave my armatus alone now?
It seemed that armatus are very nimble fish because there are 2 extremely small "nicks" at the anal fin where it NEVER seems to heal.

Will the tail heal back to normal? Will the anal fin too?

Come on all you payara keepers out there....

Those wounds should heal with good clean water. Why are you keeping such an ugly fish anyway?

If in doubt, 50% water change and a week long dose of melafix as said above. I don't feed while I'm doing a melafix treatment either.

Armatus do seem prone to getting imperfect fins. Most of the big ones I've seen in pics online have jagged looking fins. I personally think it adds to their 'flavor'.

The ripped parts have sealed up and the white edging at the tail is forming again. The problem is, the tail fin is now unsymmetrical! The top part of the tail is now larger than the bottom part of the tail. Will that part grow back or will the top tail be always bigger than the bottom part of the tail?

It should even back out over time but for my payaras it always takes awhile.

If its just fin damage I wouldn't be too worried. You've added salt, so just keep on top of waterchanges and it should heal up. Its a minor injury.

It seems that payaras are very "bad" at regenerating there fins back to their original. As people may of noticed, a baby armatus are born with perfect forked tails. As all of us might know, all of our armatus don't have perfect forked tails since it must of been bitten at the tail when they were young. I just kinda doubt if the tail will regenerate the bitten off part and just keep growing in that constant shape.

Anybody can confirm that from experience? The tail where it's bitten at has a sharp zigzag pattern with the normal clear white edging.
