Ahhh, so that's why the crack pipe was in the fish tank.......I wondered.
Just kidding. He's scared of his tail now too. It keeps chasing him and everytime he turns around to see if it's gone, it's still chasing him......flippin little freak....

Careful of this... I've seen aros where their tails were all chewed up due to this behaviour.

Mei, something must have caused this change in behaviour...new lights? drastic water change? I don't like behaviour changes....

how long is it in the 75?

He's been tail chasing for awhile now, what do I do to stop it? Yes, I recenty upped him to a 75 but he did it before in the 55. Nothing new to trigger it. I think another tankmate may help to keep his level of interest more normal, he needs living things to interact with in someway or another.

He's quite friendy, he likes attention, he counts on me for a lot of attention, he likes it. He has fits of anxiety if I interact less or he is bored. I think the new 150, with a few more happy nice fish will make his world a lot better.

He'll be in the 150 in 4 wks or less, he's 13", it's tight, but he grew about 6" faster than my last, or the timing would have been more size appropriate.

But if anyone has tips on tail chasing, please let me know.

in an effort to help you out, i did a google search...

i'm not sure if i'm allowed to post links on our threads which take you to another aro forum...but i'll post it anyway. if it breaks any rules, a moderator can remove it.

Seems the problem is mostly behavioural. If the aro is by itself right now, adding some tankmates to spur some interest would be ideal. If it's not that serious and fins aren't all ripped up or anything, then I'll wait till it's in the 150G.
Small tank size may be the problem too. The fish has to turn more, and more often at that, so it actually sees it's tail more often.

Your silver does sound really fun though. It seems like it's bored and needs something to chase/play with haha.

No experience with this sort of thing but a couple of thoughts; Try adding some floating plastic plants that he would have to navigate through, kinda like a maze. Also you could add a couple of power heads to add current. Then once or twice a week you can change things around, maybe this would distract him from his tail, or it may just really piss him off.

Good luck with this.

Wow, thank you guys. I know he's tight in the current tank, but I do try to keep him at least entertained. Thank you so much for taking the time to research it more, that was very thoughtful.

It's funny you mention the powerhead, I just this past week found and old one and got it running and have been using it for a few hours at a time. He enjoys it, and it ticks him off if it's "in his spot", the plants too, I have done that very thing, making mazes, when he was smaller, he loved it. Now he hates plants and attacks them. Goofball. He loves trying to tag the pleco, but she's way to fast.

Now I cleared out most of the tank so he'd have maximum space, he uses the entire tank, unlike my other Aro's.

I've been watching the tail chasing, half laughing, half worried, but figured the 150 would curb it. I do plan on adding a tankmate, still figuring out what to add. I want harmony, not 2 monsters fighting. The Zen theory applies to all of my pets, and they generally are quite content.

This Aro is getting better at interacting with me, he's not afraid, he gets into my business the minute I start working in the tank. He loves to be gently rubbed (2 fingers) at the end of his body (meat not fins), he developed dropeye and the change in his vision drastically altered his behavior 2-3 mos ago. It was like starting all over again. Now, I see progress again. He was afraid of everything. Now he's learned to handle the change.

I can't wait for my new tank, I'm sure he feels the same way. I think I've been duped by the people I was going to get the 150 from, so I ordered one from my lfs (359.00 just tank 6" long, 20" front to back, and I don't recall the height, but not too tall, which means I can reach the bottom for cleaning!
It's tougher to buy anything where I live it's pretty remote, long ways to a large city and most tanks come with a large shipping cost. Either way, I'm counting down the days!

Thanks again!Mei and Fu Man Chu

some arows just have this stupid behavior called "tail-biting syndrome" :irked:
This is something puppies and kittens are supposed to do! I keep saying it, Aro's are like dogs. Ever had a dog?
They beg. They chase their tails, they poodoo in the house, they get depressed when ignored, they catch their food when you toss it, and they are easily conditioned to do "tricks"!

He LOVES to chase the laser light too, no, he's not scared of it, he chases it all over. So do the cats.

I have the world's strangest pets. I always have. Yesterday a truck drove by my house, stopped, rolled down the window and two dudes are looking at my yard, one says "What The F is THAT?", it was my wild Guinea Fowl (Rattlesnake patrol) I laughed my a** off.

Now I have 9 mule deer outside and a pack of coyotes with puppies hanging out too!

It's time to build an ARK!
