My previous silver used to jump & knock the hood at midnight constantly. I pulled out a plugpin of fluoroscent tube from the socket and he stopped jumping.

Plugged fluoroscent tube flickers at night which used to spook him and go bizarre.

Does he jump all the time or certain time of day? Tankmates? Size of aro? Size of tank?

yeah i no hes fine hes jumped out of the tank multiple fine hes a beast but it makes me bummed when friends and family come to llok at my tank and hes all banged up i think im going to try lowering the temp because dont higher temps make fish more active?

I think thats one of your problems. I find that if you keep an aro for a long time, they wont be skittish around their owner, but whenever they see someone unfamiliar, they get jumpy and scared. Its a common thing. Cant really prevent these things. Might be a good idea to lower your water level though so he wont hit the lid as hard. Glad to see your lid is secure though. Last time i had some guests over with their kids, they knew i liked keeping rays and aros so they asked me to show them my fish room. So i take them down there, right when they stepped in front of the first aro tank, 2 came flying out. The lid had 2 bricks on it and they still got out. I dont know how the pet stores do it, but thats my experience. Also another thing is they dont like red. Do you wear red alot?

all very true.
my old aro never was skittish around my mum or me since we always were near the tank feeding etc.
but when it saw my sis or dad ner the tank it would freeaaak.
and yea,THEY HATE RED!

How big is your aro and how many cichla's do you have in the tank? Could be over crowding.

try lowering the water level a bit. its a natural tendency for aros to jump
