my australian monster.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i recently got one for the first time, (about 2-3 months ago) and have never seen as much "punch per inch" in a fish.

now hes about 3/3.5 inch and is a wrecking ball. he used to beat up on the barramundi when i first put him in. (when the barra was eating bronze goldfish bigger than the jack). but now they get along except for thieving food from each other.

in my tank I've got two big solid rocks that the jack uses to "tenderize" his prey. he simply grabs the goldfish, usually by the head. and then takes it straight down the other end to pulverize the fish into edible chunks. on the rocks, as your jack was trying to do so on the gravel substrate of your tank. i think your jack would appreciate some big rocks to do the same and it sure makes for some sickening maiming of goldfish. especially with smaller fish cleaning up the scraps, like my archerfish do.

awesome fish you've got, he looks at home and healthy. nice

yes its true they do go and smash their food on rocks ect to kill them. i didnt want to put rocks in there due to the size of the fish, but may put some in. as ur jack grows the tank will become his and he will smash ur barra till it dies. my mate grew a toga and barra with with a small jack as soon as the jack hit 35cm he smashed the barra and started smashing the toga but he removed it. i dont feed live all the time. done that with my last jack and he was costing me a fortune. i usually feed frozen pillchards and prawns. he gets extra large gold fish every now and then but he doesnt even chew. just in hales

I hate when feeders are just thrown in there like it's the coliseum - if they have a hiding place or two like this, at least the big fish have to earn their expensive meal, and it's more like hunting than just slaughter :D
