Leave about 1/4-1/2 inch of sand above the trim of the tank... Thats how I do it, and since you have a small tank, they will appreciate the extra space.. Not much more you can do, if you wanna spoil them, just keep it clean.. maybe even get a powerhead or another filter... Once you have a larger aquarium, more options you will have.
