That's true. The first year of life is the most dangerous time for baby turtles. Many do not survive their first winter in hibernation in the wild. For most species it's unnecessary to hibernate them in captivity so why bother? I don't hibernate my aquatic turtles because I keep them indoors all year long. But I do let my box turtles hibernate outdoors because well...that's where they live all year and it's been proven that Terrapene carolina carolina need cooling down periods to stay healthy. But the species you had did not need to be put into hibernation. It sucks you had to learn this the hard way.
