I got one from petsmart too and at first I was feeding him cichlid floating pellets and then some bottom feeder sinking pellets. Then I switched to frozen beef heart and hikari carnivore pellets. Hes beefed up so much since I switched him. He was growing slow at first. I would try to get some frozen beefheart cubes and cut them into peices until he gets bigger.

seems like you don't know the species. FYI, that is a senegal (Polypterus Senegalus). Nice catch btw.

I think mine is a female, she is in a 75 G tank with 2 Blood Parrots, 2 Electric Yellow Labs, 1 Red Devil, and a Chinese Bristlenose Pleco. I feed mine blood worms and at times she will eat cichlid pellets also.

Never seen one with those markings come from a Petsmart. Typically, Petsmart carries Senegals. I'm in Wichita. Where in Kansas are you?
When senegals are really young they have markings that fade until gone as they grow older. Something you can try for feeding is buying the Hikari sinking carnivore and chopping it into 1/3's. Thats what I did with mine when it was that size.
